Mayor Joe got it started with his Downtown Summit on April 27th, and there’s no good reason why we shouldn’t keep the conversation going. If you have a thought about the core that did not come up at the summit or you want to talk about any of the ideas that did, here’s your forum. Post it and see what others think.

  1. I read in the Freeps that Tricar is considering building another tower in downtown. This is fantastic news, but I beg you to hire a proper architect and design this building nicer than the twin towers across from the JLC. No more commie blocks in London please. This is not 1970's Leningrad.

  2. This city stops focusing on students and instead on families. Jobs for people everyday people...this city is in the top 10 for the highest unemployment rate in Canada!! No one can afford to go spend their money because they have no job or no job security or make minimum wage. Maybe if this city stopped being a college/university city just living from September to May off students' parents money the city would prosper more.

  5. Add more attractive businesses anyway possible to this intersection to compliment Starbucks and McDonalds. If no retail business is going to use the old CIBC building find someone to turn it into an apartment. It cant just be left there to gather dust and die or just become another parking lot.

  7. After reading the article on the LF Press about our identify issues and the need for young people to stick around, my first thoughts are on the job market. With the people I'm connected to, London does not have a good reputation regarding its workforce. We are a city full of call centers and other places where people have low-paying or minimum wage jobs. The workers have no job security and no way to advance in their fields. When I first moved here, I worked at a call center with 1000 people. People were hired or fired without a blink…

  8. I am in favour of a grocery store but would not want to see the market close - I like their variety, and differences from a retail chain grocer. We currently live in Oakridge (although we've purchased a condo downtown for future) and love Remarks - we always go there for the fresh foods (ie. fruits and veges) but then go to Shoppers and/or RCSS for toiletries and soda, etc. It's nice that they are close to each other and would like to see those services/products in or near the market.

  14. London has a height limitation for new buildings. I'm not sure why we have this. We should encourage builders to build taller buildings and also encourage them to stop building commie block concrete towers. We have so many ugly twin towers made of concrete. Can't we use better design and put some glass in these towers?

  15. London needs a tourist attraction that would attract visitors from the Great Lakes region. Some kind of major museum or science centre or aquarium would bring people from all over and would be great for Londoners to come to. Check out http://www.tnaqua.org/Home.aspx and you will see what Chattanooga, Tennessee built. It's a major draw from all over the Southern USA. Chattanooga used to be a dump, but now with this attraction, they are a tourist hotspot. We are in a perfect location and we are a nice size and safe city. The hotels would love to have something like this…

  16. London has no real tourist attractions. Anyone that thinks Storybook Gardens is even close to an attraction is wrong. We have a gem of a building at the forks of the Thames. It is currently being used as office space for the County of Middlesex. Such a waste of the current building, which looks like a castle. It could be converted back to an attraction showing it's original use as a jail and courthouse. Put in people who dress from the late 1800's and show how life used to be back then. Ever heard of Alcatraz? It's San Fran's biggest…

  17. I have a mock up in Google maps here:
    http://tinyurl.com/4xsfbdj

The only reason we need vehicle traffic downtown is so people can find places to park in the core. If people had places to park around the outside of the downtown (or if transit solutions were better - the dirty buses are 2.75 each way - cash only), the inside of downtown could easily go car free. Maybe try it for a month this summer and see what works and what doesn't.

I also see the an exposed riverfront that is open for bars, cafes, and bistros. Accessible only on…

  18. There was a traffic study done in London in 1973 that recommended closing Dundas Street between Ridout and Wellington, as well as Clarence Street north of King Street, to all traffic except pedestrians and cyclists. I'd like to see that idea revived. It would allow for a public square at what is now Dundas and Clarence, possibly with gardens and a fountain, and also it can be integrated with Victoria Park. London Transit would run on King and Queens.

  19. Could be better used in many new ways. As a large greenhouse, or for solar panels to help run city hall, or a small outdoor market. Or anything, really. I never see anyone there, and it seems like a fantastic and yet under-utilized space.

  20. There is some grafetti that has existed on buldings on Dundas St for years. Yes, grafetti can be art, but defacing grafetti does not have a place in our downtown.
