Downtown London needs a grocery store
When I lived in downtown London, getting groceries without a car was a real hassle. I went to the Covent Garden Market for some items, but for my weekly shop, I needed to hit a regular grocery store and there was nothing centrally located. If we want people to live downtown, we need to provide that kind of amenity.

Why not have one go into where Teletech once was in the Galleria? There's plenty of space there for one like Food Basics or No Frills.

As someone who has looked into moving downtown, a real grocery store (large mini marts don't count) would be a must. You move downtown to be able to walk everywhere. Having to take the car out defeats the purpose.

Oh yeah. I remember that. I never shopped there though. I also thought a grocery store was going into the highrises on Dundas between Wellington and Waterloo when they were built, but maybe I am confusing that with to projected building in east London.
I am thinking the closest grocery stores to downtown London are at Oxford and Richmond or Baseline and Wellington. Maybe the Old South one is close too, but at least the other two are on a busline.
I am wondering what the City can do to invite a major grocer to open in downtown. One would think if it was a viable business option someone would have been all over it by now. Therefore incentive would be required. What can a city do other than build the building or offer tax breaks?

There was a downtown grocery store, sort of. That one across from CCH called 'Price Check', which was nothing more than an oversized and overpriced mini mart. I think he lasted about a year before he shut down, and then the building sat vacant for about 8 years before anything was done with it.

Let's change the concept to an actual, affordable grocery store. Sure Shoppers has some good lost leaders, but everything else is over priced. Is a box of Kraft Dinner really $1.99 now?

Shoppers Drug Mart is being built as we speak at the corner of Richmond and Carling... I'm pretty sure it's going to include a grocery section...

The last Grocery store I recall was a Loblaw's or Dominion at Wellington and York. Now it's a parking lot.

I agree with this comment and do not worry about the London Market -- it will compliment the greatness of the open air market. Where are the premium grocers???

I 100% agree. For this reason I want to stay in Old South and not move downtown.
