If London is building a new city hall, its existing location, near Victoria Park, is the best spot.
This is the view of Coun. Nancy Branscombe, who isn't yet sold on the idea of building a new city hall.

Let us wait until the Provincial election to see if there is an Councillor Branscombe to speak to issue. Any successor would be the voice of our ward.

What could be done to expand City Hall, using the square behind it ?
Seems to us this design of 40 years ago never really took off, but taxpayers do own a good piece of land there -

current location is great - overlooking the park, away from the main shopping and restaurant areas, among other landmark buildigs - nothing wrong with location. Spend money upgrading as needed - maybe tear down Centennial Hall and create new performing arts centre with additional municipal offices above if more are needed. For sure, fix up the square (is it still called Reg Cooper Square?). It's so run down and could be a nice gathering area for other events and could showcase the surrounding buildings.

I don't agree that the current spot is the best spot. That building would make a great fanshawe college. A new cityhall can create some other exciting spin offs for construction. Something modern and interesting is needed in ANY spot of downtown.

Why does "everything" have to be in City Hall? What takes up most of the space? Council is rarely there and wants to be there less so a board table at the Convention Center, say, would suffice. As long as it had reliable media equipment, not microphones that don't seem to work at certain moments (or so I have read). How many people actually go to the Mayor's Office?

City hall is fine where it is. How is Joe going to come up with $100 million? As for the idea to put a campus there if they move it, that is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Obviously an idea put forward by someone who does not live in the immediate vicinity of city hall.

If they build a new city hall, do NOT sell the old building to that slumlord Farhi. That man is a cancer in the downtown area and has done nothing to help it.

The main question will always be: Where is the money coming from? And: Is a new City Hall more important than other issues, cost and return-wise. Fontana says if he spends $100 million the city will see a return of $400 million. How does that work and how long will this take?

Why build a new City Hall? Maybe because half of city hall isn't IN city hall, and we are in buildings all over town and paying for the priveledge. The current building is also NOT very accessible for anyone in a wheelchair. There are only two accessible bathrooms, one on 11 and one in parking. What about a new vibrant state of the art City Hall we can all be proud of, and make it a multi use building?

Okay, this may be dumber than a bag of hammers, but.....
What if the businesses of London got together and sponsored a City Hall Makeover reality show? A-Channel could do a series. It would be novel and unique and perhaps get national press, recognition and support.
Taxation by choice. This "tax" would be from advertising budgets and even with some just from goodwill.
That's $100 million saved, with all the proposed benefits plus some. -

Perhaps a reno of the outside of the building to modernize it?

Blair, but you are working and likely making a decent wage. There are thousands in London who cannot find work and thousands who have to work in much worse conditions for minimum wage. Will the taxpayers be ponying up $100m to improve their situation? I think not. BTW: What offices are on the 11th floor? Sorry, I have no call to visit city hall so really don't know the layout.

They have only renoed the 11the floor. Many more to go. Maybe only 1 floor per year. Personally I don't like working in the current building. Its very stuffy and the ventilation is archaic. Don't like working in a buildind with asbestos removal going on.

I fail to understand what's wrong with the current city hall. not only is this the best spot, haven't we sunk millions into renovations of the current building?
