An error occurred while saving the comment downtownfan commenteda couple of corrections - the welfare office was never at 217 York St. It used to be in the basement of city hall - city hall ran out of room and welfare became more about helping people get employment than giving out welfare cheques which meant that it needed more space. Why vacate a large downtown building to move an office - other than a NIMBY mentality, where would it go and to what benefit?

current location is great - overlooking the park, away from the main shopping and restaurant areas, among other landmark buildigs - nothing wrong with location. Spend money upgrading as needed - maybe tear down Centennial Hall and create new performing arts centre with additional municipal offices above if more are needed. For sure, fix up the square (is it still called Reg Cooper Square?). It's so run down and could be a nice gathering area for other events and could showcase the surrounding buildings.
