Move parking out of downtown and encourage people to walk in the core.
This idea came from Katie Wilhelm, building manager for The Met - a downtown artisans market - she also wants existing lots turned into 're-imagined' public spaces.

Don't get me started on drivers and puddles. I am a walker. I have been hit with it all.

true enough! i can envision people in business suits walking to work and buses hitting slush puddles at 50kph. maybe we can create more jobs downtown by opening up more dry cleaners there...

To answer your last question. No. An emphatic no! As to the rest....when we think of downtown, at least us who don't live there, we think summer. Perhaps. I have to say in all of these forum comments I always envision summer scenes. Good point on winter, something we may all be trying to forget.

sure, encourage people to walk in the core, but this is canada. correct me if i'm wrong, but it gets really cold here and it snows a lot for a very long time. i live down town and i sure don't like to have to walk in sub zero weather. where exactly would you suggest that the parking get moved to? i'm not seeing many places to put it and even if there were, do you really want to cover yet more open spaces with asphalt or concrete parking structures?

I am not disabled, but I am a person with a disability and I can not walk. I would appreciate it if there were places not only to park, but definitely for transit to drop off people with challenges so we can be part of downtown. There are already a TON of places we can't even get into the front door of with a wheelchair. Either there is a small step, or there is so much stuff at the door, no way.

Excellent point, Shelley. I am not hip to all the lingo but I think that is called a monopoly.

It's already been said, but is worth saying again and shame on Katie for discounting it. What about the disabled?

I think this is a bad idea. It's already tough to get people to shop, eat and check out entertainment downtown because parking is such a hassle. If you move parking out of the core and expect people to walk to reach their destinations, they'll be even less likely to visit the downtown area. And what about people who physically can't walk? There would be accessibility issues for sure. Making some areas of the downtown car-free/parking-free might be an option but moving all parking away from the core definitely isn't viable.

Business would cringe and so would most people who would have to walk. Novel idea though

this is a horrible idea. downtown needs more parking and cheaper parking at that. yes, it would be nice if we all walked everywhere but in reality - and in the winter - this is the definition of "pie-in-the-sky" thinking. also, who's going to walk to downtown from the suburbs? people drive TO downtown and then walk around.
