I'm really confused as to why people want a bandshell put in when there is already a bandshell five mins away at Vic Park??
I thought that Harris Park was beautiful, every time I go there (usually a few times a week in the summer), there are tons of people! The river kind of speaks for itself.
The only thing I would like to see more of would be gardens. Something colourful and pretty. I'm not too sure how I feel about bars and patios... maybe one bar/restaurant with a rooftop patio overlooking the river, but it brings in rowdy people and big messes to clean up.

Yes, let's all be the same and shop at all of the same stores.
The shops downtown are AWESOME! Have you ever been to Weezy? Commander Salamander? Frilly Lizard? Ten Thousand Villages? Most downtown shops are independently owned which means that they put THOUGHT and CREATIVITY into their product. Old Navy and The Gap don't do that.

Victoria Park already has statues and monuments! The skating rink and Christmas lights make it a nice place to go in the winter. Maybe they can create some great outdoor spaces for the summer? A garden with a gazebo, or little nook-and-cranny places where people can sit in the shade? A fenced in fish pond with a bridge over it? haha... the park is nice but it is very plain. I would stay away from rides though, it would constantly sound like the Western Fair. Sometimes there are rides set up at the festivals though!

Have you ever been to London's Eldon House? It's similar to what you described. It's just down the street.
A friend of mine got married at the Old Courthouse and it was beautiful. From the outside, it still looks beautiful and the inside is being maintained properly since it's being used daily. It's not rotting away, which is a good start.
It would be really neat to see it in it's original form, I agree.

Fanshawe College wants to open a School for Applied and Performance Arts downtown, proposing that they restore and renovate existing buildings in downtown London. The city just granted them 20 million dollars. A loft building would probably be really awesome for rehearsal spaces.

A place for people to hang out doesn't always work as planned. Sometimes it just turns into a place for homeless people to sleep which apparently is frowned upon. D&R is full of old buildings that can really be cleaned up to look beautiful. What if the market bought it as an extension? Opened up a real grocery store around there somewhere along with other little local shops that rent from them. I feel that if the block was owned by one company it would be easier to monitor what goes in and out of there.

I understand that there is poverty, and there are people in this city who really need the help that they receive from welfare. There are a good chunk of people in this city who have made their lives better with the help and support that has been provided.
However, there are a select few who see welfare as free money, who don't use it to try to improve their quality of life, don't listen to social workers' advice, taking everything for granted, continually throwing themselves downhill. These are the people who are hanging out in front of the D&R McDonalds all day after they collect their cheque.
I feel that the welfare office is what is attracting these crowds. It's a tricky subject. Should the welfare office be moved somewhere less central/downtown? It is in a great location for people who have to bus or walk. Is there more than one office? Maybe having a couple others opening up throughout the city would help eliminate this crowd and make it more accessible throughout the city.

The idea of free parking in London’s downtown is a good one. It could bring people to the city’s core and encourage the commerce business owners need. LFP will explore the pros and cons of this divisive issue in the weeks to come.

Maybe not FREE parking, but most lots (cough, cough, Impark, cough) charge more than ten dollars for parking! Why does the price need to be so high?

If it is or isn't because of OW that people loiter there the fact is that... people loiter there...
How can we effectively stop this from happening? It really is scary walking down the street listening to people screaming random profanities at anyone. There isn't a doubt in my mind that if the McDonalds was taken out of there (which I'm sure is out of Mr. Fontana's hands) it would make a huge impact on the situation. Just walk in there and take a look around, most people are sketchy. Sketchy to me doesn't mean that they have tattoos, that doesn't matter. It's just people who are loud, rude and ignorant. I find it hard to describe without grouping a certain stereotype into one category, but I'm sure most people see what I'm talking about.

This is a great suggestion! Sidewalks that are falling apart need to be replaces anyway, so why not do it with something prettier than grey concrete! And the idea for having two different colours on the sidewalk for bikers and other forms of transportation is a great way to make London more green! If this is provided it will encourage people to use other means of transportation, rather than driving everywhere.

I love this suggestion. London is too big to only have one area that offers huge entertainment opportunities. I think this would also be a way to clean up the old part of East London to make it a safer place for families.

GWEN: "everyone" can't drive to their local grocery store either. As a single person living alone in downtown London, I would LOVE it if there was a grocery store that I could walk to. I'm pretty sure I could manage carrying three bags home by myself. It's not a rule that "everyone" should have to do something, but for those of us who would like to walk around, enjoy the fresh air and community, just having the option to do so would be nice. This suggestion goes hand in hand with having less residential-only neighbourhoods.
People wonder why London doesn't seem friendly, or why things aren't the way they "used to be" (RockinonLdn). The reason is because it has evolved. Big Box stores moved in, cookie cutter residential areas were built and technology turned into a much bigger deal that it used to be. Now London needs to reverse all of that. Toronto is big city but how many big box stores do you see there? It's more about little community markets and independent shops. I feel that by encouraging people to shop where they live you can turn any old neighbourhood into a community. You will see your friend's and neighbours on a regular basis, get to know local shop owners, and feel comfortable living in a place where people are friendly and kind.

YES! I agree! Being from London, I like the small town vibe. But the fact is that London is getting bigger. Places like Byron and Lambeth should have their own little downtown cores to provide entertainment, jobs, and a sense of community and culture.
The idea of making London more accessible to walkers and bikers is awesome and I really hope that this is taken into consideration.

Museum London? Eldon House? Harris Park? Victoria Park? Springbank Park? Storybook Gardens? The Splashpad downtown? Countless woods with paths to walk through?
Victoria Park has some sort of event going on almost every weekend in the summer, Harris Park does many festivals as well. You just need to get out and see them!
I love how you just dismiss it by calling it a "dumb idea" with no backing what-so ever. Explain yourself properly.
