Glad to know there's others that feels the same way I do about slumlord Farhi. The man has done nothing for downtown. I remember him having a hissy fit about that heritage property and holding it ranson. Basically saying "Rent this space from me or I'll tear it down!". Once again, only in London would this happen.

This city is a joke. Without a car, you're pretty much SOL. Either relegated to minimum wage jobs that are completely dead end, or working for a temp service that steals half your wages. And even then with the latter, many of their jobs only pay minimum wages(or that pay barely past it) AND require a car.
What is the motivation to stay here? Dr. Oeteker is building a plant way out in the middle of nowhere. The Hanwha plant, you need a car to work at, as well as the Cakerie as well.
Even the route that service the industrial park out in Newbold area, it is basically useless. - If you start at 7am, there's no way you can make it there on time for a day shift. An afternoon, you can get there, but how the heck do you get home? And nights, you can get home from there, but how do you get to work? Walk? That's not realistic. How does that help anyone really?
I'm still very much annoyed by all the "out of service" buses we see downtown at rush hour, when there's only a few buses on, and we're packed in like sardines.

Set your default location to London ON in Google. That way all you have to do is type in an address (525 Dundas Street London ON for example) and it will point right to Beal Sec. At least that's how it works on Firefox, not sure about IE.

It's one thing for Scot's Corner to have their little set up of a few tables in front of their store front, but it's not so bad that it makes walking on the side walk a hazard. - That stretch of Dundas isn't that busy, not to mention, you have a few parking spaces as well between you and the road.
I guess at the moment it don't really matter for Friday Night Lights because they're doing road work in front of the Royal Bank building, but just wait until they're done in a month or two. I'm actually surprised an accident hasn't happened in previous years because of this.
I think Farhi is just as much to blame for this because he owns that building, and he would have to give the 'OK' for this thing would he not?

That patio is so large that they had to remove a bus stop that had been there for years.

What about buying the Bell building and turning it into city hall? And if there's room, have other municipal offices there as well. If there's no room for those, use the current city hall building for those offices. You could have the Ontario Works, London & Middlesex Housing and other city offices in there . Maybe rent out spare office space as well.

Clean up our rivers, and USE them. A boat ride to Springbank from the forks once more would be nice.

Is the Thames River even deep enough to accommodate a boat like that? In the summer months the river gets down really low. A few years ago Harris Park was so bad that you could walk from one side of the river to the other!

What they need to do is have more buses leaving the downtown during rush hour. I've lost count of the amount of times when I've seen at least five buses in a row all "out of service". Why not have at least one or two of them as a short turn bus that cuts out at Dundas/Highbury?
Instead, they pack us in like sardines into the few buses that actually are in service. This is wreckless and just plain careless on the part of LTC.
I did call and suggest they do this, but I was given an excuse of "It wouldn't be economically feasable" to so.

The idea of free parking in London’s downtown is a good one. It could bring people to the city’s core and encourage the commerce business owners need. LFP will explore the pros and cons of this divisive issue in the weeks to come.

Free parking downtown? Great, so anyone that lives down there can just park there for free while someone that needs to go downtown for whatever reason can't find parking? Like it or not, there's no free parking (or very limited) down there for a reason.

Buses all meet up down at D&R because it's a main intersection. Someone getting off a bus heading east or west towards downtown might need to jump on a 4A/B or a 26 to get to work or school out towards White Oaks or Fanshawe College.
Regarding getting panhandled 5 times in as many minutes, many of those people don't want help, and are happy living the life(if you can even call it that) they do. I see some of the same people down there as I did 15 years ago when I attended Beal, and would skip class sometimes to go downtown to one of the three arcades that were down there.

This would be possible if we had the room for a bus terminal like Sudbury has in their downtown.
Had they built the JLC out in Masonville, the site of the former Talbot Hotel would be the perfect spot for this. All the downtown buses could meet up there, and you'd wait inside a small building with a few take away places to grab a quick snack or a coffee before your bus arrives.
But you're crazy if you think that moving the bus stops away from D&R would get rid of the hoods down there.

And where would you have people park? There's not enough parking as it is right now. Big box stores like Wally World or Costco are better off not being downtown. What they need to do is have shops to cater to people that live in the area. They're better off with that instead of trying to bring people in from other parts of the city.

And regarding Centretown Mall, it sat vacant for far too long. I only vaguely remember when a store was last in there, (1991?) I think it was a Bargain Harold's or a By-Way?

To answer your question about how long it takes to get into social housing, I guess it all depends on your situation. I was told by Sudbury Housing I can have a place around this time next year, which is perfect because I'm going to be attending school there at that time(Fanshawe doesn't offer what I want in London), and I applied last year, so about two years. I think London is about the same for a 'non-emergency' case.
They have adult buildings that are open to pretty much anyone, (you don't want 241 Simcoe, trust me) as well as senior buildings. Three that come to mind are that large one on Kent Street, McNay Street and Hale Street as well.
For a family unit, it takes quite a while. Basically by the time one does open up, your kids will probably be done high school and be looking at going away for school or moving out on their own.

In other cities they have private landlords say to the local social housing office "I'll give you 30 units out of 120". The landlord wins because he'll always have money coming from that regardless, and people that need a place to live win because they'll get out of the shelters, scummy rooming houses or illegal basement apartments.
Once they go through training as mandated by Ontario Works they'll land a real job, and eventually pay real rent if they make over a certain amount.
The going rate with London Housing is 30% of your before deductions income, up to a max of 500 for a bachelor, or 600 for a 1 bedroom.

Indeed. I see all these luxury highrises going up, but who can afford to pay $1,000 a month in rent? Was it really necessary to build that one building on I think, King Street? And then there's the other one going up in the place where the Ridout Tavern used to be.

So you also think that busting a bunch of peaceful weed smokers on 4/20 was also a wise use of police time and resources? I myself am not a smoker of cigarettes (I find it repulsive) but could care less if someone smokes outside at a bus stop.
Oddly enough, in Sudbury they have a by-law (or maybe it's just on the Cambrian College property) that you can't smoke anywhere near a bus stop. Not just in the shelters, but you have to be away entirely from the bus stop.

And how do you propose we enforce this? Just more waste of police resources that could be better spent elsewhere.
I had the misfortune of being downtown last night at the McDonald's and was disgusted at the state of the sidewalk. Stained with who knows what and garbage all over.
It reminded me of why I hate going down there int he first place.
